Swept away, Ai looked back to see Rin standing quietly at front desk where he smiled and waved back. Ai could barely believe this was what Rin had in mind for their special day, but some how it made sense. They had said so many times that they would break up at the end of the school year, Rin would go away to become the swimmer he always dreamed of, and Ai would pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. But so long as they both followed their paths, it was inevitable that they would corss paths again. This was Rin’s way of telling him this. He forced back the tears in his eyes as they showed him around, though on occasion he was asked if he was okay.

His boyfriend, who stayed back, let his arm fall when Ai disappeared into the busy office, and suddenly he was alone. Though he wanted to express to Ai that he was supportive of his dream, it still crushed his heart. Hw siehd he could just take his friend with him, but they had their own paths to take that would put Rin around the world, and Ai needed to be tied to one place. Thinking that soon he would lose his lover, however, brought tears to his eyes again, and he slipped into a back corner and shielded his face from onlookers. This was supposed to be a special day, he thought to himself. It would be… but god, it made him sad as hell.

They ate together at a café that evening, Rin confessed he had less allowance than usual so he couldn’t afford a fancy dinner, but Ai was happy for it. “Café’s are always more pleasant to sit in, don’t you think, senpai?” Ai said between sips of his cocoa. “Everything feels more like home.” Rin smiled, reaching out and taking his boyfriends hand with a smile and laugh. Ai seemed to mind less and less when they would show their affections in public these days. As as much shone through as they stepped outside into the cold weather and Ai slipped his fingers into Rin’s. “We’ll go through the park,” Ai suggested when inquired. It was getting late.

“I’m happy,” Ai confessed as they moved down the path. “Everything lately has been so nice. Even if it’s been hard sometimes, things always seem to work out. Sometimes I worry that means the next few years are going to be hard…”

“Heh? What makes you say that?”

“Ah, I guess it’s just a trade off thing. Like you leaving is payback for having such a good year with you.”

“We haven’t dated that long.”

“I’ve liked you that long.”

“A whole year?”

“I’m not sure I knew until later.”

Rin huffed, but he agreed. He didn’t think he liked Ai until it hit him like an express train. “If that’s the case, then this is payment for my shit life before I showed up at Samezuka.”

Subdued as his smile was, Ai simpered at his boyfriend. “Maybe that’s the same for me also.”

Why, Rin wondered again, anyone like Ai could have such a mediocre life before they met still astonished him. The kid was always annoying, but he wasn’t a bad person. He never did bad things. He only wanted goodness in others lives. “Hold up,” muttered Rin, stopping slowly and waiting for Ai to pick up on it. With his head down, he thought for a moment then lookd across at Ai, who’s innocence shone through in the early evening. “Ai, if shit hasn’t improved for you for whatever reason before we meet again at the Olypics, you better tell me when we meet then, and I’ll make sure you live the best damn life anyone could ask for. Promise me you’ll tell me.”

“….Senpai…..”

“Promise me.”

“I-“ Ai hesitates, and then smiles sadly. “Yes! No matter what I’ll see you then, and we’ll talk.” Ai wanted to cry then. He never thought he’d come to mean so much to Rin. The red head then stepped forward and kissed him, his lips a little drier than usual, but still prefect. Rin could still taste the hot chocolate from the café. Throwing his arms around the red head, Ai deepened the kiss, and like their first one, the two held each other a long time as they kissed.

Rin hurried them then to Haru’s home, where he was told where the spare key was hid. “A-are you sure?”

“Yeah, Haru said it was fine, and they’re at Makoto’s place for us.”

“Okay…” Ai flushed anxiously, and followed Rin inside of the home. Rin pulled his shoes off, and Ai followed suit. “Are we doing this now?”

“Are you chickening out?”

“No! No, you know I-“ between their exchange, however, Rin drew himself closer to Ai again, positioning himself close to the silvery haired second year. A kiss on Ai’s cheek made him stop, and he took a breath in. “
